Many cities and motorway networks have extensive traffic-monitoring systems, using closed-circuit television to detect congestion and locate accidents. Systems can be configured and used to store the images captured by the cameras as well as the letters and numbers from a license plate. Some systems can be configured to capture and store a photograph of the driver. Systems commonly use infrared lighting to allow the camera to take the picture at any time of the day. Fixed camera systems can be mounted in boxes or on poles beside the road, attached to road signs over the road, or secured to overpasses or bridges. Cameras can also be concealed, mounted over or beside a road; or installed in an enforcement vehicle to detect traffic violations and record vehicle stops.

Intelligent Transportation Systems

A CCTV network of cameras covering a motorway and truck road network are primarily used to monitor traffic conditions and are not used as speed cameras. With the addition of fixed cameras for the Active Traffic Management system, the number of cameras on the Highway Agency's CCTV network is scalable and can grow significantly over the years.

Cameras are used to detect vehicles inside the chargeable area which have not paid the appropriate fee. Toll booth cameras identify vehicles proceeding through a toll booth without paying the toll and automatically reads the license plates of cars. If the driver does not pay the charge then a fine will be imposed. 

Cameras identify vehicles violating occupancy requirements and photographs the license plate and driver.  The system can be configured to issue citations.

This camera is situated in intersections where specific turns are prohibited on a red light or otherwise.  This type of camera is mostly used in cities or heavily populated areas.

ANPR Systems can be used for multiple purposes, including identifying stolen cars, untaxed and uninsured vehicles. Systems commonly use infrared lighting to allow the camera to take the picture at any time of the day. ANPR technology tends to be region-specific, owing to plate variation from place to place.

These cameras detect vehicles that should not be in the bus lane. These cameras may be mounted on buses themselves as well as by the roadside.

Parking Cameras are used for issuing citations to vehicles that are illegally parked or which were not moved from a street at posted times.  The latest development with video surveillance is the Parking Violation car which is equipped with one or more cameras, laser shooter(s) and a GPS device connected to an onboard computer. This equipment allows the parking enforcement officer to cruise down streets as the system scans parked cars.  That data along with the time taken are stored in the computer until the Parking Vehicle returns to the same street. The computer compares the old photos with the ones its taking on the second pass, and when it comes across a car that’s been there too long, a pinging sound signals the officer who issues a parking ticket after verifying the license plate and vehicle matches the photo. This system allows one parking officer to do the job of many.

Parking Lot and Parking Garage cameras are used to monitor activities and the movement of customers within the parking lot and serve as criminal prevention.
